The Most Difficult Thought: Preview

“Out, out, brief candle!

Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player

That struts and frets his hour upon the stage

And then is heard no more; it is a tale

Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,

Signifying nothing.”

William Shakespeare, Macbeth

It is what Friedrich Nietzsche called ‘the most difficult thought’: that life may indeed be purposeless. If nothingness prevails, how then does one cope with the anguish of reality? Is survival possible?

In an absurd world, there can be no answers or solutions. Passion is itself meaningless. Futility hangs like a shroud, clinging to our bodies.
